Is The City Of Mobile Alabama On The Beach?

is-the-city-of-mobile-alabama-on-the-beach

I would think that most people outside the state of Alabama and outside of the city of Mobile would think that the city of Mobile Alabama would be located on the shores of a beach area.

The City of Mobile, AL is a port city at the top or North end of Mobile Bay. It is about 32 miles North of Fort Morgan and located in Mobile County Alabama. Their are numerous points of entry to the bay and surrounding water sources including the Mobile and Tensaw Rivers, but no beach areas in the city limits.

However, you do not have to drive to far to find a sandy beach to lay out and enjoy the spring and summer months to work on your tan. Check Out what’s close by that you and your family can relax on.

Dauphin Island Mobile Alabama Beaches

If you are asking “where can I swim in Mobile, Alabama” – your best bet is going to be Dauphin Island, AL beaches.

Just South of downtown is a barrier island with plenty of beach space for you and your family to stretch out and relax. There are three areas of beaches to choose from.

Dauphin Island East End Public Beach

Located on the East end of the island on the South side of Fort Gaines is a huge public beach area. You have access to a large area to walk, sit or lay out to soak in some sun.

Access to Fort Gaines is near including The Estuarium At Dauphin Island, a hands on exhibit displaying 4 of the major habitats of our coastal Alabama environment which is part of the Dauphin Sea Lab.

You can also visit Dauphin Island from the Eastern Shore area using the Mobile Bay Ferry

At the center point of Dauphin Island is the Public Beach that provides picnic tables and is pet friendly.

The hours of operation are 8am to 6pm all year long! There is a charge called environmental fees:

  • Cars are $6 each
  • Walk-Ins are $2 each and
  • RV’s, Buses or Travel Trailers are $20 each

You are required to clean up after you visit and your pets. Pets must be on a leash. If you need medical assistance you can call Dauphin Island Police at 251-861-5523.

At the West end of Dauphin Island, there is another public area that provides showers, picnic tables and a water slide. Bathrooms are also accessible and I’m told that snack vendors are present.

Best Beaches In Alabama

Now we have talked about all of the beaches that are close to the city of Mobile, AL and some small, secluded areas shown in our table above.

However, if you want the best of the best of the best. Then you’re gonna have to travel down Hwy 59 in South Baldwin County Alabama to get to those areas.

I’m quite bias when it comes to these beaches, but you have to realize. I’ve been all up the East coast from the keys to New York City, Long Island and New Hampshire and Maine.

My brother-in-law has worked and lived from San Diego all the way up to Washington State along the coast.

The only place I have been that can compete, if not beat these beaches, is The Bahamas.

Gulf Shores, AL – West Beach Alabama Strip

West Beach Boulevard Alabama Beaches have some of the most sugary, sandy beaches in the country.

This stretch of beach area runs from about the luxurious Halekai III beachfront property on the West end, past Hwy 59 junction at The Hangout down to Ron Jon’s at the edge of Orange Beach city limits.

My first trip to the ocean and it was simply amazing here! The beach was so clean, sand so white and soft, and a great place for families!! Not to crowded, and we went at the end of July! So many fun things to do within a short distance! Many great restaurants near by!! I highly recommend Gulf shores to anyone! And the sunsets are breath taking!!

You can also taken in plenty of beach area, trails, fishing, tennis, golf and even a zip line at the Gulf State Park that is just East of Hwy 59 on East Beach Blvd or the “Alabama’s Coastal Connection”

Orange Beach, AL – The Other Best Beach

From Ron Jon’s Surf shop at the edge of the Gulf State Park over toward the famous Flora-Bama at the Alabama/Florida state line is the ‘other’ best beach in the United States…in my humble opinion.

Not only does this area have some of the most beautiful beaches, it is also home to The Wharf and countless fantastic seafood restaurants.

There is another beach park area that is one of the most visited places in Orange Beach. Alabama Point East / Florida Point at Perdido Pass.

Expansive beach area with boardwalks, picnic areas and of course, bathroom and shower facilities.

So, whether you are in the City of Mobile, AL area and can drive a short distance down to Dauphin Island or can take a trek over to Baldwin County and down Hwy 59 to the beautiful shores of Orange Beach or Gulf Shores, AL – believe me – you will not be disappointed.
