Fort Gaines

This fort at the East end of Dauphin Island has protected the entrance, along with Fort Morgan, of Mobile Bay for over 150 years. The well preserved ramparts for the fort have stood the test of time.

The famous order giving by Admiral Farragut “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” has been said by my late father-n-law is incorrect. He says that the Admiral said “Damn those torpedoes are coming! Full speed out of here!”.

Now I’m not sure if my father-n-law was correct in his rendition of history…so, I’ll go with the historic version.
