Estuarium Dauphin Island
Just South of the City of Mobile Alabama, on the barrier island called Dauphin, is the Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab. It is a 35 acre marine research center on the East end of Dauphin Island.
This is a marine science education and research facility that assists with coastal policy and educational standards along the Gulf Coast of the Gulf of Mexico. They have been in existence since 1971 and support educational endeavors with local schools from K thru 12th grade.
The public aquarium is open to the public and hosts many local events throughout the year. A ‘Boardwalk Talk’ program exists and the ‘Summer Excursion’ program takes visitors out into the nearby marine life area of Dauphin Island.

Fort Gaines
This fort at the East end of Dauphin Island has protected the entrance, along with Fort Morgan, of Mobile Bay for over 150 years. The well preserved ramparts for the fort have stood the test of time.
The famous order giving by Admiral Farragut “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” has been said by my late father-n-law is incorrect. He says that the Admiral said “Damn those torpedoes are coming! Full speed out of here!”.
Now I’m not sure if my father-n-law was correct in his rendition of history…so, I’ll go with the historic version.

Bellingrath Gardens
Bellingrath Gardens is one of the premier gardens in the US. This 65 acre wonderland is home to about 400 varies of camellias which is the state flower for Alabama.

You can also tour Walter and Bessie’s residents. The Bellingraths maintained and created this fabulous place up until 1934. It is a 15 room, 10,500 square foot master piece designed by George B. Rogers of Mobile, AL.
