It’s Time To Scream For It: Best Mobile Alabama Ice Cream Shops

mobile alabama ice cream shops

Back in the late 60’s and 70’s, my grandparents owned a drive-in restaurant called the Dizzy Dip.

It was one of a few Mobile Alabama Ice Cream Shops in the area. Along with our extensive menu of burgers, dogs, fries, New Orleans Style Po-Boys sandwiches and seafood items, we had one of the best known ice cream bars around.

Since its closing, it was hard to find a place in Mobile Alabama to fill its “cone” so to speak. So, where can you find a fantastic place to get good ice cream around here?

Mobile has over 16 different shops that serves ice cream or ice cream products.  From old time hard scoop to soft serve – to specialty ice creams and ice cream cakes.  Have it mixed up on a cold hard granite block or stainless steel and rolled up. Here is an extensive list of shops in the area and where to find them.

Let’s start this guide off with a place that has been in business since my grandparents started up their drive-in restaurant in the late 60’s.

Cammie’s Old Dutch Ice Cream Shoppe

Located on Old Shell Road in Mobile, Alabama, this shop is owned and operated by Cammie Wayne that use to work there when she was 16 years old.

Cammie purchased the ice cream shop from Edwin Widemire back in 1998 after he opened it back in 1969.

It was listed as the “Best Ice Cream Shop” for the state of Alabama by MentalFloss.com back in 2017.

…I’ve been there…I agree.

She still keeps the old time shop nostalgic feeling going with 47 different flavors of ice cream made in house.  They also have Pennsylvania Dutch Milkshakes and traditional banana splits, floats and sundaes.

“Had my son’s 5th birthday party here yesterday, it was so cute and sweet and the staff couldn’t be better – not to mention some amazing ice cream!!! – Denise B. – Facebook Reviewer

Dippin’ Dots

This ice cream shop can honestly state that it was scientifically engineered to be the best unconventional ice cream with a unique flavor and taste.

Curt Jones back in 1988, a microbiologist, most likely was bored trying to find a way to freeze rich people so they could come back to life as a younger person, was able to use cryogenic technology to breath new life into the ice cream industry.

Thus “Dippin Dots” was born.

This location on Airport Blvd in Mobile offers its traditional Dippin’ Dots ice cream, sherbet and frozen yogurt products.

“Awesome place. I’m a fan of dippin dots. Still am. Their ice cream is really good. And the fact of the dots makes it fun to eat. I went here on a Sunday evening and the staff was very nice and laughed at my corny jokes…” Hayden W. – Yelp Reviewer

Moonpie General Store

Mr. Earl Mitchell, a traveling salesman for a regional bakery, was traveling in coal country in Kentucky back in 1917.  One of the coal miners asked Earl if they could make a snack “as big as the moon”.

Just a short time later, Mr. Mitchell came back with a lunch pail sized bakery treat and they called it the “Moonpie”.

The Chattanooga Bakery were producing hundreds of boxes every day by 1929 and they sold for only 5 cents each.

Along with breakfast and lunch menu, you can find a soda fountain and ice cream bar at the downtown Mobile Alabama location of The MoonPie General Store.

“OMG… this fresh flavored frozen cotton candy is the best thing I have ever eaten with so many varieties of flavorless, toppings, fruit, and fresh cream topped with bobas! The peach princess tastes just like my favorite homemade snow ice cream with fresh peaches made by my deceased grandmother (Myra Cook) from Arkansas that I though couldn’t be beat!! Though this…. is the bomb!! Not to forget to mention the service is outstanding!!” Robin B. – Facebook Reviewer

Scooped Nitrogen Creamery

Like Dippin’ Dots, this place has the science behind it.

Scooped Nitrogen Creamery freezes its ice cream with liquid nitrogen at -320 degree F.  They say it freezes so fast that ice crystals don’t have a chance to form at a large size.

There’s no freezer burn and no fluff because there is no large air bubbles which increases the smoothness of this ice cream product.

Don’t worry!  It’s safe. Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air we breath anyway.

Get your Nitrogen Scooped Ice Cream in:

  • Kid’s Cup
  • Waffle Taco
  • Milkshake or
  • Float

Just choose your base in premium, sugar free or vegan including your mix-in toppings and then add some on top.
